We just love digital tryvertising and this interactive terminal at Takashimaya department store in Shinjuku blew us away when we stumbled upon it a few months back. The Digital Cosmetic Mirror by industry giant Shiseido can be used to test make-up and recommendations without even having to pick up a mascara brush! Using augmented reality to do sampling is a novel way to involve consumers, and can be a useful technology for saving on waste as we cover in our ECO Japan innovation report.

All you do is sit down and let the camera scan your face. The terminal then gives you tailored recommendations. Pressing a few buttons on the touch-screen paints make-up onto your image in realtime, allowing you to see the results instantly. You also try out make-up that is currently making waves, along with printing out before and after photos with product information for you to go make the purchase of whichever colors caught your eye the most.

This is soooo cool! Wish we had these in USA
this is cool! i wish we had in BKK,Thailand
Nice ARvertising tool! Congrats
This is very neat. If we had this in the U.S. in the Sephora stores, it would eliminate the need for all those cotton balls, make-up pads, q-tips, alcohol, etc. to try out make-up on our faces and in the end, may help make the store a bit more eco-friendly. Although the whole fun of going into a Sephora is to physically try on the make-up but replacing a few of those stations with these digital ones would be great to see and try out.
Wow!
I can see that Minority Report style advertising is not going to be that far away after all. Really innovative use of AR for marketing purposes though.
I would like to know if the digital mirror can be used for any line of cosmetics or only by Shiseido? Also can be order ?
Looking forward to hear from you soon,
Kind Regards,
Elisabeta

Now this is one of the reasons why I love Japan!
Wow, another cool work.. I wonder how I’d look like when I’m inside that cosmetic mirror? haha
I am an academic researcher in the field of Augmented Reality, I ve done a case study on Tissot Reality application in London, I m currently a PhD candidate in Tsukuba Daigaku in Japan, and would like to be in touch with CScoutJapan for case study analysis for my research.
Best, Nora
Japan is awesome. They are always on the cutting edge of technology. When I visited there about 10 years ago, everyone was using mobile phones like they are today in America. They really are so far ahead that unless you visit there, you can’t even realize it.
I would like to have one of those
